The Queen's Royal Irish Hussars

The Queen's Royal Irish Hussars were formed from the amalgamation of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars and the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars in Hohne 1958. The first tour as a Regiment was in Hohne as part of the 7th Armoured Brigade. In 1961 they re-roled as an armoured reconnaissance Regiment deploying to Aden for a year of peace patroling.

The Regiment moved straight from Aden to Malaya in October in 1962 and were Garrisoned in Ipoh, Singapore. The Squadrons rotated through a series camps, patroling the borders to keep the peace from being broken by Indonesian communist forces. 1964 saw the QRIH move back to Germany as an Armoured car Regiment. They returned to England for a short time in Perham Down and Bovington before returning to Germany / Paderborn. 1974 the Regiment deployed on a tour of Cyprus to help in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion as part of the United Nations peace keeping force.

In 1979 the Regiment moved once again to Tidworth for three years, during this time an independant squadron was formed and completed two tours as the Armoured Reconesence squadron in Cyprus and a small part of which became the ceasefire monitors in Rhodesia. The Regiment was back in Germany / Munster from 1982 - 1987, during which time it was to complete a 6 month spell in the Maze prison / N. Ireland as the guard force.

Bovington and Catterick followed Munster, then once again it was back to Germany in 1990 where the Regiment was deployed to the Gulf and the Gulf War, as part of the 7th Armoured Brigade. On their return to Germany normality was soon to return with a tour of Cyprus as part of the the United Nations.

The Regiment amalgamated with the Queens Own Hussars in 1993 to form the Queen's Royal Hussars.
