The Regiment was formed in 1690 in Scotland as Dragoons. It was again disbanded in 1714 and restored the following year and had the title "H.R.H. The Princess of Wales Own Regiment of Dragoons" bestowed on it. On the accession of the Prince of Wales as George the second, the Prince became Queen Consort and the Regimental title was amended accordingly to "The 7th" or "The Queen's Own Dragoons". In 1742 it was numbered the 7th. It later became converted to Light Dragoons in 1783 and to Hussars on the 25th December 1807 becoming The 7th (Queens Own) Hussars. Several other changes followed but it was finally know as the "7th Queens Own Hussars".

The sabretache (left) is described as follows: The first Sabretache is shown in illustrations to be faced with white cloth edged all round with Gold lace and bearing on the face a crown in full colours above the Queen's Cypher 'CR' in gold. A change in colour appears to have come about 1812 when the face was changed to scarlet, this remaining the colour until 1902. From 1812 the design was a gold crown embroidered in full colour above the monogram 'G.R' in gold. waist. A feature of the 7th Hussars sabretache was that at no time did it carry sprays of laurel or battle honour scrolls, they were always edged with gold lace. |
