The 15th Hussars were raised as Dragoons in 1759 under the Colonelcy of of George Augustus Eliot, later known as Lord Heathfield, famous as the defender of Gibraltar during the great siege of 1779 - 1783. The Regiment was granted "The King's" title and known as "The 15th King's Dragoons" in 1766 and was converted to "Hussars" in 1807.
