The 21st Hussars

The Regiment was raised in 1858 and called The 3rd Bengal European Light Cavalry. In 1859 the name of the Regiment changed with the political scene and they became the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry.

In 1861 it became apart of the new British Army and was now known as the 21st Regiment of Hussar's, only to be renamed the 21st Hussar's in 1877.

In 1897 the Regiment distinguished themselves at the Battle of Khartoum for which they were converted to Lancers and given the additional title of Empress of India's and they therefore became the 21st Lancer's (Empress of India's). In 1922 the Regiment amalgamated with the 17th Lancer's to form the 17th/21st Lancer's.

The Sabretache: From 1861 to 1864 the sabretache was faced with scarlet cloth and from 1864 to 1897 with cloth of a French Grey colour. The design on the face however remained the same for both. Each pattern had a gold crown with coloured embroidery to represent the jewels. The cypher 'VR' was carried, plus sprays of laurel and a ring enclosing the '21' over 'H' on a ground of the facing colour, all embroidered in gold. Gold Regimental lace was edged along both side and bottom of the sabretache, a central white stripe on the scarlet pattern was seen on the first issue, the second had a stripe of French Grey.
