The 20th Hussars

This is one of the hardest Regiments to research as it was formed and disbanded on so many occasions, it has many different tails and dates in relation to its history, I have tried to see what is the more 'popular' course of events.

There have been several Regiments know as the 20th (Dragoons) the first was raised in 1759 in Innerskilling and served only in wartime until 1862 and being one of the junior regiments it suffered a series of disbandment's after each and every conflict. It had great delight in its nickname 'nobodies Own' as it had no Royal Colonel.

There were three Regiments prior to the later, the later of the three won all of the battle honours. In 1791 it served in Jamaica during the Maroon War (1795 - 1796). It was present at the capture of Cap of Good Hope in 1806 and was subsequently moved to serve in South America at Monte Video and Buenos Ayres. A portion of the Regiment also took part in the descent on Calabria, and was also present at the Battle of Maida. It went to Portugal 1808, and was distinguished in its service at Vimiera, it received great praise from a Sir Arther Wellesley for both conduct and valor!

The Regiment was formed again in Muttra 1861, Bengal by some volunteers from the East India Company's 2nd Bengal European Light Cavalry, It participated in the capture of Genoa in 1814 before its disbandment in 1818. It was raised again and converted to Light Dragoons in 1861 and changed to Hussars in 1862. The Regiment claimed to fire the first British round shot in anger in the First World war.

In 1922 the Regiment amalgamated with the 14th (King's) Hussars to form the 14th/20th Hussars.
