Raised in 1715 as Honeywood's Dragoons and fought in both Jacobite rebellions. The Regiments first battle honour was Warburg which the earned fighting side by side with the 10th. The Regiment saw action in the peninsular war from where they were given their nickname 'the Cherrypickers' after a battle was fought in a cherry orchard. They were later to capture some French Guns in action.

The Regiment was converted to Light Dragoons in 1783 and to Hussars in 1840. In 1840 Prince Albert came to England to marry Queen Victoria and the 11th Light Dragoons furnished the escort from Dover to Canterbury. In commemoration of this service the Regiment was converted to Hussars and had conferred upon it the Royal title becoming the "11th (or Prince of Albert's Own) Hussars" and the Regiment were then asked to wear Prince Albert's Crimson trousers. Prince Albert was appointed Colonel of the Regiment on the 30th April 1840.

The Regiment played a major part in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava, after which it returned to England and later saw tours all around the world including Ireland, India and South Africa.

The Regiment fought in some major battles in France during the first world war mostly in the dismounted role.

The 11th Hussars were one of the first Regiments in 1928 to become fully mechanised as an armoured car Regiment.

During the Second World War The 11th Hussars won more battle honours than any other Cavalry or Tank Regiment, fighting in the desert campaign and North-West Europe. After the war they served in Malaya, Northern Ireland, Aden, Kuwait and Germany before amalgamating with the 10th Royal Hussars (PWO) in 1969.
